Cacatua galerita
no worries.. :) u just made it alittle bit more interesting, and now we know that his brother is Critically Endangered specie!!
Yes, you guys are totally right. I didn't check too well the location as you can see, but now you know is a Cacatua galerita. Thank you all!
Well, i guess im both happy and sad now... but u'r right.. this project is a good way to get to know so many species, and if it helps saving some - then it was worth it..
still, we got alot of work ahead!!
Caroline!! u almost made me cry!! :)
ShiloVinograd .. Sydney was the give away for me.. and I think the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is larger!
That's why I like PROJECT NOAH!! I they still need protection from the wild cowboys here in Australia!!!
I suspected that, Christiane! It is a Sulphur-crested cockatoo, Shilo. But you guys learned something new today about a similar cockatoo. Sorry!
I think you might find this is actually a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Cacatua Galerita, which is extremely common and abundant in Australia. The Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockatoo) lists both as separate species, perhaps more research is needed here to see what the differences are.
Very very sad. Cats unfortunately also have a major role here. They are voracious predators in an environment where the native species have not had enough time to co-evolve the predator-prey dynamics.
Yes it is sad... By the way.. this one is not a Yellow-crested Cockatoo... it is a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo.. Cacatua galerita.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulphur-cre...
Can't believe what u'r saying!!!!
i've been there around 2004/5 and they seemed just fine..
It can happen soo fast.. :(
Guys, I think there is a confusion here, maybe is a Sulphur-crested cockatoo. I'd like someone from Australia to verify this info.
That's really sad Christiane, I don't understand why someone would like to shot such a beautiful bird. You can read more about their status here: http://www.iucnredlist.org/apps/redlist/...
I can not believe that this birds are CRITICALLY ENDANGERED too.. And I am very sure it is not just the pet trade.. I have found them shot or killed in bird netting around the country!
You're welcome Shilo! These cockatoos are listed as Critically Endangered due pet trade. It's really sad.
And thank you! You've got beautiful pictures too :)
