Adult pair of Stick Insects

Oncotophasma cf. martini (Griffini, 1896)

Description:

Long, spindly insects that tend to move slowly, blending in with the vegetation around them. Note the difference in appearance between the two sexes. This sexual dimorphism is typical of this order of insects (Phasmatodea) and the male is the smaller, skinnier one with reddish body segments and blueish legs. The female is all green and much thicker.

Habitat:

Found on the Rio Celeste Trail in Tenorio Volcano National Park on a palm not far from the main trail. I would classify it as cloud forest,

Notes:

Update-Thanks to Yannick Bellanger on Flickr for helping ID these. I've been trying to ID these for a while, with no luck. I did find a web page with some images of what seems to be the same species taken in Monteverde, www.marietta.edu/~biol/costa_rica/montev...... . The images are near the bottom of the page, but here are some direct links: www.marietta.edu/~biol/costa_rica/montev...... www.marietta.edu/~biol/costa_rica/montev...... www.marietta.edu/~biol/costa_rica/montev...... Sadly they don't provide any ID either. You can see a higher resolution version of this image at https://www.flickr.com/photos/66454855@N...
