Kodiak Brown Bear

Ursus arctos middendorffi

Description:

We came upon three bears together surrounded by a large flock of ducks. One was laying down, and the other two were milling around looking for salmon (presumably). Though we were at least 100 yards away and making almost no noise, they saw us and started walking away. The one laying down got up and we saw it had a considerable amount of fat already even just in early September. You can see it in the first 3 photos.

Habitat:

In the grass at the end of a secluded cove on Afognak Island.

Thanks Tukup! We saw 8-10 bears on this trip, and a few beds. They are thriving here. No matter how many I see though, it is always awesome to see them.
