Great Hornbill

Description:

A flock of 5 or 6 of them flew from the top of one tree to another, moving down the valley.

Habitat:

Tall trees in the primary rainforest

Notes:

This one is flaring his wings as he prepares to land on the branch of the tree. Bokor National Park, Kampot Province, Cambodia

Such an impressive bird. Can't believe how big it is! And how caring parents they are! Whilst the female is barred into the tree, the male goes out and collects food for her and the chicks!

wow! so lucky to see these in the wild. In Europe we have them in some zoos but is much more exciting to find them in their natural habitat.
The amazing thing is what I once saw in a documentary: that the females close themselves up in a tree hole with some paste that they make with their beak and regurgitation, and that solidifies, and stay there until babies are born. The male feeds the female through a little hole she leaves undone but otherwise she is literally "behind bars" through all the incubation process..
