probably Azolla http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azolla
or Duckweed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemnaoideae...
most people mistake Azolla for duckweed...and Azolla should be pretty common where you live. If you can get back to the spot scoop some up and look at it under a hand lens.
