Monkey-mind was correct - the tree is a California Horse-chestnut - also known as a California Buckeye.

Is this possible some sort of butterfly bush?

you are right the leaves do not look like Aesculus, the flowers do look like it though, the florescence isn´t similar either...

the flowers look like an Aesculus, horse chestnut tree
