Butorides sundevalli
I would love to invite you to share your Ecuadorian bird spottings in my mission: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/4508...
Please add this lovely spotting to the new Galapagos mission at http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/1478...
Thank you for both the common and scientific names, Malcom, it was spotted in Galapagos Islands.
Your bird looks like a Galapagos Lava Heron, you say Ecuador but the map pointer is in the middle of the ocean - is that the Galapagos Islands? If so the scientific name is Butorides sundevalli.
