Mattiphus Shield Bug

Mattiphus reflexus

Description:

Glimmering gold, green, yellow, cream and brown; body length 2.5 cm (1 inch).

Habitat:

Hills overlooking Manila.

Notes:

An hour ago he made a crash landing just outside my window, the sudden loud buzzing sound caught my attention and I saw him on his back waving his legs helplessly in the air... Was amazed by his golden tummy... Was even more amazed when I helped him over on to his feet again - and saw the rest of him...

Yes, you can imagine how delighted I was when another one dropped by for a visit 3 months later: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/750...

@Nicole: am pretty gobsmacked at "the variety of critters" here... Mind you I shouldn't be so surprised - in this tropical climate EVERYthing grows!

Nicole, on the Wonder-Scale of 1-10, I was pretty close to a 10 when I saw this one, I can tell you! :-) Like the most exquisite piece of jewellery I'd ever seen... AND it was a living creature...

OK, this one beats anything in the 'contest'!
Whoa!
Look at those colours!

Maybe a different species but belongs to the same genus?

Ashish, the color of the legs is different than most of the photos I've seen too, but then there's color variation between moults. Here's the best page I've found for photos of P. rubens, which is still only speculation on my part : http://www.natureloveyou.sg/Dillenia%20s...

Peter actually I was confused with this bug's whitish legs..!!

Euschistus sp. is endemic to North America. It makes more sense for this to be a Pycanum rubens since it was spotted in the Philippines.

Ashish, Lori has already been gracious enough to provide not only the genus but also the species name. Please be mindful of this when rushing to suggest a generic common name. There are over 7000 species of stink bugs in the Pentatomoidea superfamily.

Thanks so much lori.tas and AshishNimkar!

'Stink bug' as a name really doesn't do him justice somehow (though it's handy to know about his method of defense)... Think I'll remember him as 'Sheild bug' :-)

I think you may have a just moulted Pycanum rubens.

Thank YOU for cofounding ProjectNoah!!!

Yes, I'm so impressed by this beetle's colours. If a person can be in love with a bug - that's how I feel right now!
