Goosander

Mergus merganser

Description:

Large (55-65 cm in length) light grey bird with a characteristic long, narrow, dented red bill ending in a small hook. Chest and belly white to whitish, with orange legs. Head is rusty red, looking more voluminous because of the crest. At this time, male and female look alike; juveniles (pic N° 5) have pale face markings between the eye and the base of bill (not easy to see, I admit)...

Habitat:

Here seen in large numbers, chicks, juveniles and adults, on shores of lake Leman (Geneva) - in urban setting.
