We brazilians call them Ameixas amarelas (yellow plums), although they are not related to the real plums. The fruits ripe in late winter and early spring - june through september. It is a very common plant in southern Brazil (where I live), due to the cold winters we have here. I love the fruits, and eat more (much more) than my fair share, every year... ;-)

I love loquats. As Nicholas says they are sweet and tangy. Pity your tree didn't survive in California. You have to come to the Mediterranean in May to taste this delicious fruit.

Ahh..Isabela.. what memories you bring.. we also have the Loquat trees all over the place at our home in Greece. Love to eat them.. lots of them.. very sweet and tangy.. I bought a tree here in the US from California, but got ruined in a harsh October, believe it or not.. it snowed early and I had not prepped it for winter..
Hope you enjoy eating them..
Wish I was there for a taste..
