Cirsium vulgare
Cirsium vulgare (Spear Thistle) is a species of the genus Cirsium, native throughout most of Europe (north to 66°N, locally 68°N), western Asia (east to the Yenisei Valley), and northwestern Africa (Atlas Mountains). It is also naturalised in North America and Australia and is as an invasive weed in some areas.

Oh yeah, Wikipedia is very western, if not to say US, oriented. Makes it hard to use as your only research base.
Wikipedia lacks proper Asian information. I find that Tricholepis species are newly defined in recent worked in taxonomic survey.

@Ashish, if I search for Tricholepis I find something really different. Could you send me a link to the Indian 'equivalent'? Would be interesting to see since the thistle is more or less a weed over here.
Its very close to Tricholepis plants from India.
