Sulphur tuft

Description:

This saprophagic mushroom grows in tight clusters on decaying wood. The cap is smooth and bicolored: yellowish close to edges, and darker orange-brown in the center. There is also a black edge to the cap (see Pic N° 4 and 5), which may be absent. The gills are crowded and initially yellow. With the time and maturity, they would darken to a green-blackish colour. The spore print (which I did not do) is brown.

Habitat:

Grows in clusters on dead and decaying wood on forest floor. Here, observed in mixed broadleaved forest near Geneva; where it occurs abundantly and grows throughout the year.

Notes:

Toxic. Could be confounded (at least in my eyes) with Galerina marginata (also toxic) and Kuehneromyces mutabilis (edible and appreciated).
