It is a species of crab exclusively found in the Northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea

Until recently, it was considered Maja squinado had a wide distribution range but molecular studies (DNA) have shown it is restricted to the Mediterranean and the Atlantic species is Maja brachydactyla.
