There's no Aralias on Panama and actually there are many tree species with spikes so it can be easily confused with other trees.
OOPS. aralia spinosa. I have one in my backyard in Florida.
I've always known them as Hercules club. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zanthoxylum... There's also the arailis spinosa.
