American Alligator Hatchlings

Alligator mississippiensis

Description:

A pile of little alligator hatchlings spotted in Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Georgia. In the last photo you can see the mother, who was right underneath the hatchlings in a drainage ditch.

Habitat:

The American alligator inhabits freshwater wetlands, such as marshes and cypress swamps from Texas to North Carolina. Endemic to the southeastern US.

Notes:

Alligators are apex predators and consume fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Hatchlings feed mostly on invertebrates. The species is the official state reptile of three states: Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
