Marbled White

Melanargia galathea

Description:

The marbled white has a characteristic dark brown and white chequered pattern. It is a member of the Satyrinae subfamily. Spotted here in a mountain meadow (1600 m ASL) where just about every butterfly was a marbled white.

Habitat:

Meadows, with a liking for Centaurea. Distributed across Europe from southern England to north Africa and eastwards to Italy, Greece and Poland.

Notes:

Flies from May to September as one generation. Note the second butterfly on the first and second shot. The third shot shows the butterfly's underwings.
