They are the most-owned pet turtle, but can contract salmonella...even if when you buy it and it isn't infected. All turtles can contract salmonella, and sliders are also considered an invasive species. As of July 1, 2007, it is illegal to sell any type of wild red-eared slider in Florida, and in Tennessee, it is illegal to own any animal caught in the wild, as a pet.
