Hongo

Amanita subsect. Vittadiniae Bas

Habitat:

Rainforest

Notes:

This/these stretch from Florida and the Caribbean region to Brazil…at least. The name A. aureofloccosa Bas has been applied; however, this material was described from Africa and belongs in a group that lacks clamp connections at the base of the basidia (Bas’ stirps Thiersii). The yellow material that I have examined from Florida and Mexico has clamp connections at the bases of basidia and, therefore, can be assigned to Bas’ stirps Nauseosa. My provisional name (not on WAO) for the yellow species with which I am familiar is “aureosylvatica.” All known species of both stirps Thiersii and stirps Nauseosa are “free-living”—they do not form mycorrhizae with plants and can digest cellulose (dead plant matter) or the products of partial digestion of cellulose by other organisms. Very best, Rod Tulloss
