Description:

Has stongly angled forewings and hindwings with prominent streamers. Upperwings rich brown with creamy margins, underwings marbled maroon, purple, orange and white. Wingspan 70-80mm.

Habitat:

Widespread, seen in gardens and grassy areas.

Thanks! He actually landed on my hat at one point, because I was stood so still, but he didn't stay long enough for me to try and get a picture!

This was the first time I've ever seen one. I saw the picture in my wildlife book and really wanted to see one properly, but hadn't until this week. He is a handsome fellar, and a large butterfly too. Thanks!
