Black Swallowtail (female)

Papilo polyxenes

Description:

female black swallowtail butterfly. This photo was taken as the buttefly was emerging from its chrysalis. My daughter and I captured the caterpillar in our garden and kept it fed until it went into the chrysalis. We were lucky enough to be able to watch it emerge. Beautiful!!

Habitat:

caterpillar was found on parsley in our garden

Notes:

For pictures of this butterfly in its larval stage, see my post: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/687...
