Black Vulture

Coragyps atratus

Description:

Large black bird, grey face, short tail and white patches near wing tips. Essential to have in the area to clean up and eat dead animals on the roads and elsewhere. Surprised to catch this one walking on our roof.

Habitat:

I was in the pool and happened to look up and see this bird strolling across our roof. I yelled to my husband to bring my camera and actually took these two pictures while I was in the pool. I sometimes see them early in the morning on my walk, in a small group waking up in a large tree.

Notes:

Recently I accomodated one Vulture by dragging a very large Armadillo off the road for him so the cars would not hit him.

I agree Alice, they are an important part of the ecosystem. I just picture you now shooting the pic in your pool.
