California Newt or Orange-Bellied Newt

Taricha torosa

Description:

5 to 8 inch long newts with dark brown to reddish brown backs, and orange bellies. 4 fingered toes and knobby skin. Very docile creatures that spend much of their time at the bottom of freshwater rivers. Feed on small fish and insects.

Habitat:

This little fellow, too young for me to sex, was found at the bottom of the slow moving Chetco River by the Southern Oregon coast with a cluster of its comrades. Very calm, as usual.
