Great Blanketflower

Gaillardia aristata

Description:

This bright yellow flower with its red-brown center may stand 2-4 feet tall, but these were a bit shorter, probably due to the high altitude at which we found them. Leaves are similar to dandelions and the flowers are approximately 2.5 inches across.

Habitat:

Grasslands to about treeline on mountains.

Notes:

The Lewis and Clark expedition found and described this flower on July 7, 1806 not far from where I photographed this clump.
