The Deceiver or Waxy Laccaria

Laccaria laccata

Description:

Gills, stipe and cap all the same tawny rust colour, with the cap a little bit lighter. Mature cap turns upward in a beautiful frilly cup. Fruits prolifically on the lawns that have leaves and forest debris on them. Largest cap is about 2 inches across and stipe is about 2 - 3 inches tall.

Habitat:

Pacific Westcoast rainforest, lawns with leaves and debris, moss.

Notes:

This mushroom had me fooled for a while as some sources say it is mycorrhizal with several types of trees none of which I have on my property or anywhere near it. What is near these mushrooms is cedar - no birch, pine or beech trees anywhere near here. But it also can be on heaths and other habitat so I am content now that it is really the Deceiver - thanks to Mark and Antonio!

Right, there is no partial veil.

I can't see any evidence of partial veils. I would expect it to be The Deceiver... but you must be confident with what's in your part of the world.

Thanks Mark and Jellis. I see that Laccaria bicolor is abundant in our area but I think the gills are too light for my mushroom. I am thinking more of Laccaria laccata, but don't have enough info yet. More study needed!

Possibly Cortinarius sp. Not sure but isn't Laccaria more in the lower part of North America?
