Turkey Vultures

Cathartes aura

Description:

After smelling a couple washed up carp that ended up freezing in a pond over the winter a couple Turkey Vultures visited about every other day for about 3 weeks to get their feed on. By the middle of week two we had as many as 8 of them coming to scavenge off the dead fish

Habitat:

Actually I read they are ground-birds that live and "hang their hat" in abandoned barns, sheds, hollowed out tree's, etc... Mainly due to their huge size. They do look like turkey's from a distance but far from similar when flying. I was amazed to find out they have a great energy-saving way to basically fly for half the day while flapping their wings only a couple times an HOUR if they didn't smell something earlier! Turkey Vultures basically are naturally equipped with some majorly Advanced tools. To get as high up as they do, a Turkey Vulture basically catches a jet stream allowing it to quickly soar to heights that make them look like bluebirds even with a 6ft wingspan! Once up there they can't really see much as far as small details like Hawk or Falcon. But there is no need. The Turkey Vulture can smell its way to pinpoint accuracy. In this case some Carp that froze over the Winter thawed out and day 1. I saw two By day 8 or 8 there were at least 9 Turkey Vultures coming to visit across our pond.
