Large brown bird, on his own sitting in the middle of the creek on the sandbar, was gone when I checked on him later.

Ok been hunting the net and the only thing it could be is a juvenile Pacific Gull! I've lived here 5 years and have never seen anything like it before or since! Cheers for putting me on the Gull path, a starting point always helps!

Well, it's a Gull.
What Gull is a tough one for me, since Gulls are a pain to ID to begin with and you being in Australia leaves me with no clue :D
