Spotted Hyena

Crocuta crocuta

Description:

We were lucky enough to spot a small group of spotted hyena attempting to hunt in the Ngorongoro crater, Tanzania. They were trying to separate a zebra foal from it's mother but the whole herd massed around the foal effectively corralling him in. The hyenas eventually gave up presumably because a zebra kick can kill or seriously injure even a large predator.

Habitat:

Ngorongoro crater

Thanks Arun. It was fascinating to watch but we did breath a sigh of relief when the hyena abandoned their pursuit of the foal!
