Carolina Mantis

Stagmomantis carolina

Description:

Various shades of brown and would estimate around 4 inches in length. Blended in very well with the weathered concrete in my backyard.

Habitat:

This one was found hanging in my backyard which borders a grassy and wooded area. Our yard is home to a lot of insects...but I'm guessing there are a few less with this gal around.

Notes:

I didn't notice him until after my dog, Beulah the Border Collie. I've seen several mantis over the couple months. This one seemed on the larger side of all the others. (No animals were harmed in the making of these photographs)

Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!

You're welcome come Pamela. That's why notes make all the difference and are important in complementing your images. Also, thank you for your kind words!

Thanks! I thought her curiosity was sweet, but I was hesitant to post it. A picture can be read so many different ways and while my dog is great, at "leave it", I didn't want to come across as someone who condones domesticated animals abusing nature.
Thanks again (and for all you do).

Thanks so much for the confirmation and the information! I'm not very confident ID'ing these.

Females also have a wider abdomen. :-)

Yes, Pamela, you have a nice female Carolina Mantis there. This is an adult. You can tell it's a female because of the short wings.
