Jumping Spider

Bavia sp.

Description:

According to Wikipedia, "Bavia species are around 6 to 11 millimetres (0.24 to 0.43 in) long in both sexes. Species of this genus are slender with long legs." I would only add that this particular species of Bavia (which seems to be very common in this part of the Philippines) is instantly recognizable by its body and front legs being black with small light coloured markings and the other six legs being light in colour with small black markings. When I first came across one, several years ago, I thought it was a small scorpion and it appears that many other people have had the same first impression.

Habitat:

Spotted in our back garden, climbing around on a bamboo stick which was supporting a tall Sunflower. Much of our garden is given to growing vegetables which constantly attract a wide variety of insects. So it is probably safe to assume that many of these small creatures may present Bavia spiders with opportunities for predation.

Notes:

I have had great difficulty identifying any Bavia spp. to species level. So I would be grateful for any suggestions.
