Eastern Giant Swallowtail

Papilio cresphontes

Description:

Large. Wingspan about 140mm. Body length about 45mm. Predominantly black on top with two dotted yellow bands forming a sideways 'y' across each pair of wings. Wings mostly yellow below. Body primarily yellow with a dorsal black line running to the tip of the abdomen.

Habitat:

Urban garden. Primarily fed at Zinnias. Occasionally at butterfly bush or Purple Coneflower.

Notes:

Very similar in habits to the locally more common Black Swallowtail. Continually flutters wings while feeding, spending only a few seconds at each flower.
