From what I know, they have a thick mantle on the front to keep warm in winter. I would also believe, although I am not positive, that it probably helps to make them look bigger to a predator and is not on the hind quarter so that they don't have extra weight and can run without a problem.

I am not very informed about this animals..why do they have mantle only on front part?
