Macrothylacia rubi
Large and hairy caterpillar, about 7cm in length, but difficult to see all details because of that hair... Hair is long and black and grey; letting a rusty colour of the stripes on the body protrude. This caterpillar is at its final stage of growth; it will hibernate in this form, and transform to pupae first thing in spring.
Found in a ditch next to our nets posed to protect salamanders on edges of a protected lowland oak forest, in Geneva lake valley. This particular forest is protected as recognized and important habitat of Fire Salamanders.
