Very small hoverfly about 3 mm long. The male has a red abdomen and the female has a copper abdomen. This pair was mating on Sage.
Mexican Bush Sage in backyard. "In our area, from Yukon to Newfoundland, south to California and Florida, as far south as Costa Rica; also Palaearctic and Afrotropica"

Thank you Lauren! The male is easily recognizable but not the female, at least for me. I was happy to get two together!
Great shots Cindy! And for so tiny a fly. Good to have both sexes together since they are dimorphic.
