Description:

An elegant shorebird with an upturned bill that is found throughout Western North America and sometimes in huge number as shown. The birds nest in both freshwater and brackish marshes from sea level to high up in the Rockies.

Notes:

An airplane disturbed this huge flock, causing most of the birds to take flight as shown in the sequence.

Here in Oregon we've been excited about seeing a pair in Eugene and a single in Bandon. Amazing! The pair in Eugene has twice tried unsuccessfully to raise chicks. At the beginning of migration several other pairs showed up in the same area.
