Callospermophilus lateralis
A typical adult ranges from 23–30 cm (9–12 inches) in length. The golden-mantled ground squirrel can be identified by its chipmunk-like stripes and coloration, but unlike chipmunks, it lacks any facial stripes.
It is equally at home in a wide variety of forest habitats as well as rocky meadows, and even sagebrush flats.
The lack of facial stripes confused me for some time since I was sure it was a chipmunk, but that was the key to its identification! This individual stuck around for quite awhile and wasn't the least bothered by having his picture taken repeatedly.
