i accidently placed it on a milkweed plant after picking it up(genius me). there were nettle plants around it.

I'm thinking this is the Common Buckeye. The plant it is feeding on does not appear to be nettle.

My first instinct was Red Admiral, but the two are very similar. Did you notice what it was feeding on?
