Toxorhynchites cf. haemorrhoidalis
This mosquito has a red tail and a blue iridescent body. Its head looks like a toilet brush :-)
Costa Rica on a leaf
I think it is the same as this one http://www.diptera.info/forum/viewthread...

At first sight I would certainly agree with the genus and your ID of Toxorhynchites haemorrhoidalis. But we do not have a confirmation, so we should go a) with the only the genus name of Toxorhynchites sp. or as a compromise b) Toxorhynchites cf. haemorrhoidalis. As common name I suggest Mosquito or Toxorhynchites Mosquito, but not with doubling the scientific name as common name.
Nice shot. With plumose antenna it is probably a male.
And I thought Florida mosquitoes were something! Great shot and information
What a singular name!
Midges usually have longer forelegs and hold those up rather than the hindlegs. Perhaps a Toxorhynchites sp.?
Very nice photo, and a beautiful insect! Are you sure it's not a midge?
amazing mosquito! :)
