Horace's Duskywing

Erynnis horatius

Description:

The wingspan is about 2 inches. The upperside of the wing is brown with contrasting lighter spots and patterns. This is probably a female because of the presence of pattern (the male shows little to no contrasting spots).

Habitat:

Butterfly garden with fuchsia colored zinnias.

Notes:

This is one of the larger skippers. this is probably from a recently hatched brood. Multiple butterflys are present. The last spotting of this butterfly at this location was 2014. This species has been seen on native lantana and dehybridized zinnias.
