Callery Pear (Cleveland Select)

Rosaceae, Pyrus, calleryana

Description:

These callery (cleveland select) pears which line Pointe O'Woods Drive are older and more hardy than the surrounding bradford pears which line Willow Pond Drive and Pointe O'Woods Drive and have sustained much storm damage in the past 2 severe NJ winters, Nor'Easters, and Hurricane Irene this past August. The callery cleveland variety seems to grow more upright and less like the bradford (with a bulbous, pear shaped growth).

Habitat:

US Hardiness Zone 4a thru 9b, Callery pear is native to China & in 1918 seed was brought to the United States for potential use as rootstock for cultivated pears.
