Fomitopsis pinicola

Description:

This hoof-shaped fungus is tough and very woody-like. This specimen was about 5 inches across, black at the stem, then bands of red, gold, and white. Underneath it is white and has pores.

Habitat:

Spotted on a fallen western hemlock in a mixed forest.
