Dobsonfly

Corydalus cornutus (Linnaeus)

Description:

This male showed up one evening and stayed the entire next day.

Habitat:

Hilly, wooded. Not much of a stream nearby, don't know where the hellgrammites hatched from.

Notes:

Recognition between male and female lies in the mandibles: the male has short ones (that don't hurt us if we get bit...), the female's mandibles are about half as long as the body, and hurt. If I were going to design a "steampunk" insect, I'd start here! The wings look like armor plates.
