shield-backed katydid

Description:

This katydid was really big, heavy, and calm. I thought it looked prehistoric.

Habitat:

Mormon "crickets" are indeed shield-backed katydids. They are flightless, but males have shortened, modified forewings hidden under that shield-like pronotum and they can "sing" quite loudly. Great image.
