Lovebug/Honeymoon Fly

Phidippus regius

Description:

male and female are each about 1/2 inch in length. Bodies and wings are black, with the thorax being orange. Pairs are almost always seen attached to each other, with the larger one pulling the smaller one around.

Notes:

These insects are considered a nuisance due to the fact that they gather in the thousands (or hundreds of thousands) and often become part of car bumpers (due to the acidic nature of their bodies, they are very hard to remove once dried on). However, they are harmless due to the fact that they do not sting or bite.
