Sessile Earthstar

Geastrum saccatum

Description:

One of the many Arizona earthstar fungi that occur high in the many nearby mountains.

Habitat:

They have been found to be solitary and scattered or in groups thriving off of humus under trees, usually conifers. They tend to grow during autumn up into winter, and continue to last for weeks or months while still keeping the spores intact.

Notes:

Usually having 4 - 8 rays that bend under the spore case, a single outlet for spores ("apical pore"), and the spore mass is brown and like a powder when fully mature.
