Western Fence Lizard

Sceloporus occidentalis

Description:

I call this photo "Oh, GAWD, how I LUV summer!" because that's exactly what this little, smiling guy seems like he's saying to me... :o) I have many other photos of these guys but this one is, to me, the best with the most personality showing through to the lens.

Habitat:

Dry hillsides, chaparral, oak woodlands

Notes:

While the fence lizards here in what I call "the wild hinterlands" of northern Sonoma County, Northern California are, by far, the most numerous of the lizard here, we also see the occasional "alligator lizard" that are bigger, darker- colored and very "snake-looking". I do love our fence lizards more, though, and have even made humorous photo essays of my imaginings of what they're saying to each other. LOL!
