This was spotted in a pot of carrots on our veranda - Family Swallowtail, Papilionidae - Host plant Carrot family - Queen Anne's Lace, angelica, wild parsnip, dill, fennel and parsley. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osmeterium
