Fringed Polypore

Polyporus arcularius

Description:

Fairly small mushroom I found growing (perhaps from a buried log) along a trail in the Coronado mountains here in Arizona.

Habitat:

They are found alone (like this one) or in groups on dead hardwoods, and are common. In the West, they occur in summer; in the East, they are found during spring. Some distant cousins have been found hanging out in the tropics as well.

Notes:

Cap: about 2 cm, small, golden-brown, and with a slight depression. There are fine hairs on the edge (margin) of the cap also. Pores: barely noticeable in the third picture, this fungi has pores that are fairly large (1 - 2 cm) that release the spores that create a white print. Stalk: fairly tall compared to the cap size, about 5 - 6 cm in this instance, usually hairy as well. Edible, but much too small and tough to be considered of culinary value.
