Zonotrichia leucophrys
Thanks for Identifying this one, all who did!
Thank you all! Juvenile White-crown makes sense. I've never seen a juvenile before, so was confused by the brown head. A couple months ago I saw an adult white-crown in the same area...could it be?
Its definitely a juvi White Crown. I got the same issue a few years ago...I thought that it could have been a field sparrow because of the bill. But after consulting a couple of other birders who have been birding so long that the birds were still a pair of each...:-D that we determined that it was a juvi white crowned... the way in my mind that I tellthe difference, is that a white crown has that military flat top look to it. :-D
According to my book here, Stokes Field Guide to North Am. Birds, this might be in it its first winter because it's got brown on the head and not black like the older adults. The book indicates that there can be hybrids in the subspecies, if I'm reading it correctly.
