Red Torch (Bromeliad)

Billbergia pyramidalis

Description:

This bromeliad blooms for just a short period each September, but when in flower they're a show-stopping sight. The red stalks are an inflorescence with many small flowers and last only a week or so.

Habitat:

As an epiphyte (air plant), they can be grown in any kind of soil or no soil at all (i.e. in the crook of a tree). Hardy to zone 9b or grown as an indoor plant.

Notes:

The edges of the leaves of this plant are very sharp - take care when handling.
