Monarch Butterfly Chrysalis

Danaus plexippus

Description:

The third stage of development toward becoming a butterfly is the Chrysalis or Pupa Stage. In about 10 days it emerges as a Monarch Butterfly. That cobweb looking stuff at the top of the chrysalis is called a "Silk Button" that the caterpillar spins. It acts like a glue that holds the stem (cremaster) of the Chrysalis to whatever surface it chooses to begin it's metamorphosis. No one fully understands the function of those beautiful iridescent gold spots, that look like beads towards the top of the Chrysalis.

Notes:

This is one of six Monarchs that we have raised from the egg stage. When they emerge as butterflies they will be set free, and reproduce one more generation before they migrate to Mexico. Then in another five-six generations, they will return to the east coast in the Spring. Nature is truly amazing!
